
This study aims to teach us how to improve services for individuals with Down syndrome who find it hard to be understood through speech and/or experience regular problems with choking on food or liquid. We also seek to understand how the brain helps to control swallowing and speech production.
Who can participate in this study?
Individuals with Down syndrome who:
- Are between the ages of 18-40 years old
- Are native speakers of English
Who cannot participate in this study?
Exclusion criteria:
- No diagnosis of Down syndrome
- Below the ages of 18 and or above the age of 40 years,
- Not native speakers of American English
Where does this study take place?
This study takes place at the Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic on the Penn State University Park campus.
What activities are involved in this study?
Swallowing activities: Do some things with your mouth and cheeks, such as squeeze your lips, lick your lips, and puff out your cheeks Speech and Language activities: Read single words or short sentences out loud while we measure your tongue movements with a special sensor Brain Imaging: Lie very still on a bed that goes into the imaging equipment, either resting or repeating words you hear through headphones
What is the expected time commitment of this study?
Data collection is typically completed in (4) 90 minutes sessions. For out of town participants, these visits can be scheduled over the course of two days, requiring only one trip to campus.

Is compensation provided?
Participants can earn up to $130, depending on which parts of the study they choose to do.
