Sibling Relationship Quality and Perspectives in Down Syndrome

The Sibling Relationship Quality and Perspectives in Down Syndrome study aims to better understand relationships between adults with Down syndrome and their siblings.

Who can participate in this study?

Sibling with Down syndrome eligibility:

  • Age 18 or older with Down syndrome
  • Functional communication skills (regular use of at least five-word phrases)
  • Has an adult sibling who is also willing to participate

Sibling without Down syndrome eligibility:

  • Age 18 or older without Down syndrome
  • Biological or non-biological sibling of the participant with Down syndrome
  • Not diagnosed with an intellectual or developmental disability

Who cannot participate in this study?

Individuals with a medical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or dementia that prevents them from completing surveys or engaging in an interview.

Where does this study take place?

Virtual

What activities are involved in this study?

For siblings with Down syndrome:

  • A shortened version of a sibling relationship survey read aloud by a researcher
  • A brief spoken reflection activity
  • One separate interview

For siblings without Down syndrome:

  • Online surveys about demographics, sibling relationship quality and caregiving 
    experiences
  • A brief spoken reflection activity
  • One separate interview

What is the expected time commitment of this study?

60 minutes
